Setting Up Multi-Language for Your Customer Portal

Learn how to add languages, set a default, enable auto-translate, and customize portal copy so every customer sees a portal that feels native to them.

Written by Karin Brashears

Your Customer Portal automatically serves content in the language that matches each customer's browser, no code required. Multi-Language lets you add additional languages, set a default, and customize copy across every locale so your subscribers always see a portal that feels native to them.

Follow the steps below to get started.

1. Navigate to Multi-Language Settings

Multi-Language is configured inside your Customer Portal design settings.

To get started:

  1. In your Stay AI merchant portal, navigate to Customer Portal > Multi-Language.

📌 Note: Every store has English configured as the default language out of the box. You'll see it listed as your active default when you first open this section.

2. Add a Language

You can add as many languages as your customer base requires.

To add a language:

  1. Click New Language.

  2. Select the desired language from the dropdown.

  3. Choose one of the following setup options:

    • Auto-Translate — Stay will automatically translate all portal copy into the selected language.

    • Manual — You'll enter translations yourself directly in the language file.

  4. Click Save.

💡 Tip: Auto-Translate is the fastest way to go live in a new language. You can always return and refine specific strings manually after the initial setup.

3. Set a Default Language

Your default language is what customers see when their browser locale doesn't match any language you've configured.

To set a default language:

  1. Find the language you want to set as default in your language list.

  2. Click the ⋮ menu next to it.

  3. Select Set as Default.

5. Understand How Customers Experience Language Selection

Stay detects which language to show each customer based on their browser's locale setting, you don't need to do anything to enable this.

Here's how the logic works:

  • Browser locale matches a configured language → the customer sees that language.

  • Browser locale doesn't match any configured language → the customer sees your default language.

  • Only English is configured → all customers see English.

This happens automatically on every portal load. Customers don't choose their language manually.

6. Update Portal Copy Across Languages

There are two places where you can edit the text that appears in your Customer Portal, and they work slightly differently.

Editing copy in the Design Builder

In the Design Builder's widget sections, you can update default text directly inline. Any changes you make there update the default language file.

📌 Note: Not all portal text is editable from within the Design Builder. If you're looking to translate or update a specific string that doesn't appear in the widget copy section, navigate to Multi-Language to find and edit it there.

Editing copy in Multi-Language

For full control over translated strings across all languages:

  1. Go to Customer Portal > Multi-Language.

  2. Click the language you want to edit.

  3. Find the string you want to update and enter your translation or custom text.

  4. Click Save.
