Setting Up Product Segmentation

Control which customers can see which products in your Customer Portal — down to the variant level.

Written by Karin Brashears

Control which customers can see which products in your Customer Portal — down to the variant level. With Product Segmentation, you assign segment availability directly on each product, so customers only see the items they're eligible for based on their segment membership.

Follow the steps below to get started.

Before You Begin

1. Navigate to the Product Detail Page

  1. In the Stay AI merchant portal, navigate to Product Catalog.

  2. Locate the product you want to configure and click the three-dot menu and "Edit" to open the Product Detail Page.

  3. Click the Segments tab at the top of the page.

📌 Note: The Segments tab only appears for products that have been added to your catalog. If you don't see it, confirm the product is in your catalog first.

2. Configure Product-Level Segment Availability

By default, every product is set to All Segments, meaning it's visible to all customers in the Customer Portal. You can restrict visibility by selecting one or more specific segments.

To configure availability at the product level:

  1. In the Segment Availability section, review the list of your active segments. Each row shows the segment name

  2. To restrict the product to specific segments, uncheck All Segments and select the segments you want to enable.

  3. To make the product available to all customers again, check All Segments. This deselects any individual segment selections.

  4. Click Save to apply your changes.

Best Practice: Start with All Segments as your default for most products, and use segment restrictions only for products that are genuinely intended for a specific cohort — such as VIP-exclusive items, region-specific products, or subscriber-only bundles. Over-restricting catalog availability can create confusing experiences for customers who can't find expected products.

3. Set Segment Availability by Variant (Optional)

If your product has multiple variants that should each be available to different segments, you can configure availability at the variant level instead of the product level.

To switch to per-variant configuration:

  1. In the top right of the Segment Availability section, toggle on Set Segment Availability by Variant.

  2. The view switches to a table listing each variant, the segments it's currently enabled for (shown as pill badges), and an Edit Segments action.

Edit Segments for a Variant

  1. In the variant table, click Edit Segments on the row you want to configure.

  2. In the modal, use the search input to filter segments by name if needed.

  3. Check the segments this variant should be available to, or select All Segments to make it available to everyone.

  4. Click OK to save the variant's configuration.

  5. Repeat for any other variants you want to configure.

  6. Click Save on the Product Detail Page to apply all changes.

📌 Note: Toggling Set Segment Availability by Variant off after configuring per-variant settings will revert all variants to the product-level segment selection. Per-variant configurations will be lost. If you need to switch back, you'll need to reconfigure variant-level availability.

4. Confirm How This Affects the Customer Portal

Once saved, the Customer Portal enforces segment availability automatically. Customers will only see the products and variants they're eligible for based on the segments they belong to.

A few things to know:

  • Customers who don't belong to any of the selected segments for a product will not see that product in the portal. It won't appear in the carousel, search, or add-on options.

  • If a customer is already subscribed to a product that gets restricted to a segment they're not in, they'll retain their existing subscription but won't be able to add or swap to that product in the future.

  • Segment membership is evaluated dynamically. If a customer's segment changes (e.g., they qualify for your VIP segment after their 4th order), their catalog visibility updates accordingly.

💡 Tip: Use Product Segmentation together with Dynamic Banners and Quick Actions to create fully personalized portal experiences for specific subscriber cohorts, showing them only the products, offers, and upsells relevant to them.
